Macular Degeneration (AMD/ARMD) is a mostly age-related disease that is a deterioration of the small central area of the retina responsible for visual acuity. It is mostly a gradual process with the eye steadily losing clear central vision causing blind spots when looking directly ahead.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss among older Americans and is expected to increase substantially as our population ages.

Although there is no known cure for AMD, there are treatments to slow down the process and even improve vision. The best means of diagnosing AMD is to schedule a comprehensive eye exam.

Two Types of Macular Degeneration

Dry Macular Degeneration

Constituting 85-90% of macular degeneration cases, dry AMD causes gradual central vision loss due to yellowish spots known as drusen accumulating in and around the macula. Vision looking straight ahead becomes blurry in the early stages of the disease. Catching it in its early stages is paramount to treatment.

Wet Macular Degeneration

The less common form of macular degeneration, wet AMD is when new blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak blood and fluid. This causes retinal cells to die-off creating blind spots to central vision.

This process is known as Choroidal neovascularization (CNV), which is the body's misguided way of creating a new network of blood vessels to supply more oxygen to the eye's retina. This also tends to cause blurring of central vision from scarring.
